Abstract: Developing self-study competency for students is considered as a crucial task of schools. To assess the self-study competence of learners, teachers must design tools and evaluation criteria, in which not only knowledge but also application knowledge to practice is the important criterion. Thus, in this article, author proposes practical exercises as the effective tool and a process of designing practical exercises to assess self-study ability of learners in teaching module Ecology (Biology grade 12).

Based Learning approach for student competency is all knowledge is learned must be applied in life. As environmental issues are becoming a hot issue globally, the teaching Ecology, Biology 12 students apply that knowledge in practice and in their contribution to the formation of knowledge , attitude, skills and competencies of preserving and protecting the environment is an urgent. Therefore, we propose a process to building multiple choice questions in the direction of developing the competency for students on the basis of the relationship of the essay question, exercises with multiple choice questions.
