Abstract: Protecting country’s sovereignty in general and sea and islands sovereignty in particular is a vital mission of all countries in the world, including Vietnam. Therefore, educating and raising awareness of responsibility for sea and islands sovereignty protection is required, particularly through teaching History. The article introduces some measures to raise awareness of sea and islands sovereignty protection for students through teaching history at high school with aim to not only introduce knowledge but also raise responsibility of young generation for country’s sovereignty protection in the current complicated period.

Textbooks in general - and high school history textbooks in particular - are specialized instruments designed for students to study in class and self-study at home. Textbooks also function as an essential basis for teachers to prepare lessons and conduct lectures in class. From the perspective of developing learners’ abilities approach, use of textbooks must follow orienting requirements, based on which teachers would derive optimal methods in organizing pedagogically interactive activities between teachers and textbooks, teachers and students, students and textbooks. It is necessary to ensure that such optimal methods demonstrate synthetically pedagogic science, subject’s idiosyncrasy, and the reality. These serve as a renewed approach to the methodology of teaching history in high school.
